chuck jones experience…
Circus Circus is what I consider old Las Vegas. It’s not Rat Pack Las Vegas, but old nonetheless. Unfortunately, Circus Circus also shows it’s age. About the only reason I know anyone would go there is for cheap hotel rooms. Hopefully, with the newest addition, that may change. The Chuck Jones Experience opened at the Casino about a week ago. Being a huge fan of old Warner Brothers cartoon, I had to go.
The first thing to note is the location. It’s in the back of the casino, past the Adventuredome entrances. Not the greatest of locations – there is going to be very few people who stop in by chance. This is more of a destination location – if you are there, you more than likely sought it out. The front of the exhibit is the gift shop. One might not even know there’s more to it than the gift shop. As they browse, they’ll probably realize it when they see the ticket counter next to the entrance of the exhibit.
When you first enter the exhibit, you have entered the world of Bugs and Daffy and Elmer and all the rest. The walls are styled after the classic Warner Brothers scenics. The first cartoon referenced (that I noticed, anyway) was the Rabbit of Seville. Bugs is putting tonic on Elmer’s head. From there, you enter a small theater that is playing old cartoons. I am not sure if it plays entire cartoons, as I only walked through – I didn’t take a seat. After the theater, you enter the cartoonist’s office. I’m not positive if any of the furniture is original.
The next room you enter is a room with black walls and floor. Up against one wall is the “How Do You Measure Up?” section. There are cutouts of the Tasmanian Devil, Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, and Yosemite Sam. You can stand next to them as someone takes your picture. I never really thought about how tall these characters would stand in real life. Interesting premise, that’s for sure. Nobody would have guessed a rabbit or duck could be that tall.
The next room you enter is perfect for taking pictures of yourself with characters. You’re in the middle of a film production of one of the Roadrunner/Wile E. Coyote cartoons. There are four life-sized figures here. Daffy is directing and Bugs is operating the camera. Look up to see Wile E. Coyote. Roadrunner is also looking up at him. I never realized the Roadrunner was that big, either. At the exit of the room is a nice wall-sized stylized black and white portrait of Jones. (Also pay special attention to the “rules” of the Roadrunner/Wile E. Coyote cartoons. Interesting bit of information there that I had never known (like the fact that the Roadrunner can never in fact leave the road – which would make him NOT a roadrunner). Once you’ve passed this portrait, you’ll get to see a room full of sketches and drawings from Jones. Quite a few are non-Warner Brothers subjects.
Around a corner is perhaps my favorite item. Sitting on an easel is a color sketch of the Looney Toons characters in a Robin Hood scene. From there you are surrounded by Looney Toons framed drawings and sketches. The next room has a Chuck Jones “quiz” machine – the Quiz-a-Nator. You’ll find out little tidbits about Jones – birthdate and such. The next room doesn’t really fit style-wise with the rest of the exhibit. It’s not out of place, but just seems different. On one wall are video screens showing different projects of Jones’s, including Looney Toons and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. On the opposite wall is the filmography of Chuck Jones. I knew he did a lot, but didn’t realize it was that large. Untold number of recognizable names – even if you didn’t know the name, if you saw the cartoon, you’d know it instantly.
The next room has all the interactive displays. You can check out a Zoetrope in the middle of the room. You can also play Foley Artist with a scene from Rikki Tikki Tavi. I’d love to see them make available a copy of what you made. As it is now, you just can hear it play back your effort.
After that room is one more small room chock full of sketches and drawings mixed with pictures of Jones and his crews at work.
From there the exhibit exits back into the gift shop. There are the typical gift shop items – small books, magnets, toys. But one section of the gift shop also has limited cels of animation for sale as well as higher-end figurines. They are not limited to Warner Brothers or Chuck Jones items. You will also find Disney and Peanuts items for sale. I also saw a few Hanna-Barbera related items.
The things I found most interesting in the Experience were not the interactive bits, but the drawings. Specifically the raw drawings and sketches. Kids I’m sure will like the interactive parts (don’t they always?). I also found the non-WB drawings nice. I don’t know if many people realize what Chuck Jones did beyond Warner Brothers. That’s a shame, because there was so much more after the studio closed their animation.
The admission price on the website is listed at about $20 ($15 if you are a local). I’m not positive if it’s worth that at the moment. But from what I’ve been told, my view of the price should change. There are planned additions to the exhibit – including more interactive displays. I really hope the Chuck Jones Experience survives and thrives. I’m sure I’ll make another trip when more is added.

No commentssomething new…
I’m going to try something new. We’ll see if I can keep on it. One thing I’ve been pretty bad about is checking out some of the attractions here in Las Vegas. I started making a list of things I need to see/do. I’m going to try and get at least one or two done every week. More than likely, they’ll end up on the weekends. Seems like most of the non-show things close up around 5-6pm. Not enough time for me to leave work, head home to take the dog out and then head to the attraction. Some aren’t unique to Las Vegas, but since they are here and most I can get a local discount… I might as well check them out.
If nothing else, this will give me a chance to put a little more into this blog (which, by the way, is coming up on 9 years of existence next month. Scary to think it’s been that long).
No commentsnew vehicle…
It’s official… I no longer drive an Xterra. Lothar served me well for 12 years. But repairs were starting to add up. It got to the point where it wasn’t really worth putting more money into it. The funny thing is, that truck has been around so long that it’s been a part of me. I kind of feel like I betrayed it when I traded it in. No other car I’ve ever had spent so much time with me. I hope the new vehicle lasts just as long.
So what did I get to take over? (Funny… I can’t really say replace)…

No commentsthursday, january 19, 2012…
Been trying to catch up on a few things. I’ve fallen behind on several TV shows that I’ve been watching. I finally caught up with Walking Dead and American Horror Story. I still need to catch up on Once Upon a Time and Grimm. Actually, it’s still kind of up in the air whether I like those two shows. But the previous two – I needed to catch up on those. I’m not sure about American Horror Story, but Walking Dead resumes in about a month. In the mean time, I can also keep up the reading.
I’m in the middle of the first book of Game of Thrones. Pretty damn good so far. I’m surprised how close the show kept to the book. I’m guessing I’ll be done with it by the end of next week. It’s not a throwaway read like Dan Brown’s stuff.
I’ve also started catching back up on running. So far I’m surprised how quickly I’ve been able to ramp up. Tonight I ran 6.68 miles and could have made it further, but I would probably risk hurting my knees if I did. I’ve decided I’m not that concerned about pace. I want longer distances. The pace will improve as I go along. Tonight I paused once about 2 miles in for maybe 1 minute. My overall pace was about 11:37 per mile. Considering I did 4.84 miles two days ago on the exact same route at a pace of 12:01, I’d say I’m doing just fine. I corrected myself and wore layers this time. It’ll be interesting to see how things go as the temperatures rise. I’d like to get a run in on Saturday – it’s supposed to be about 70 degrees. But it also is supposed to rain. I’m not sure if I want to deal with that.
No commentsneed to get running again…
After about 2 months of no running, I”m trying to start back up again. I did the treadmill twice – once for about 2 miles, once for about 4 miles. Last night I made my first run outside for the year. Ended up making just under 5 miles. I did stop a couple times during the run, so my “average” pace wasn’t great – about 12 minute miles. If I hadn’t stopped, I’d probably have made 10 minutes. This was also the first time I ran in such cool weather – I think it was between 45-50 degrees. And windy. By the time I finished, my stomach was actually numb. I think next time I should probably wear a second layer. My legs were fine. Then again, since they are what are doing all the work, that doesn’t surprise me.
One thing I’ve never thought to look into but makes me curious… when I start out, the first mile is murder. I don’t seem to be able to get my breathing in rhythm… seems like I’m gasping a lot of the time. But after that, it becomes easier – and I really feel like I’m working less on breathing. I would figure it’d be the opposite.
Based on breathing, I probably could have gone a lot further. But by the end, my knee was starting to hurt a little bit. Probably not a good idea to push that. I know it’ll get better as I continue. It did the same before. My main goal right now is to get my legs in shape for skiing next month. I’ll be heading to Tahoe for the first time. Hopefully by then, they’ll actually have some snow.
